Lido Key

Lido Beach

Lido Beach is the closest Gulf beach to downtown Sarasota: cross the John Ringling Causeway, circle St. Armands and you are there. The sand is wide and soft, the water is usually calm, and the public beach park keeps things simple, with restrooms, a concession stand and a free parking lot.

For a quieter stretch, walk north toward North Lido Beach, where the dunes are higher and there are no facilities at all. Pair a morning swim with lunch on St. Armands Circle, a few minutes away.

Good to know

  • Public beach park at 400 Ben Franklin Drive, with free parking.
  • Lifeguards are on duty at the main beach in season; check the flags before swimming.
  • Pair it with lunch or shopping on St. Armands Circle.

Lido Key

South Lido Park

At the southern tip of Lido Key, South Lido Park trades a classic beach day for something wilder: Australian pines, nature trails and a marked kayak trail that winds through red mangrove tunnels on the bay side.

The park faces Big Pass, the channel between Lido and Siesta Key. Currents in the pass are strong, so this is a place for walking, paddling and picnics rather than swimming. Guided kayak tours launch here, and you can rent or bring your own.

Good to know

  • Located at 2201 Ben Franklin Drive, with free parking.
  • Swimming is not recommended near Big Pass because of strong currents.
  • The mangrove tunnels are best at mid to high tide. See On the Water for guided paddles.

Longboat Key

Longboat Key

Longboat Key runs about ten miles north from Lido toward Anna Maria Island, lined with resorts, low-rise condominiums and sea grapes. Its beaches are among the least crowded in the area, partly because public parking is limited to a handful of small access points.

At the northern tip, Greer Island (locals call it Beer Can Island) is known for shelling and calm water along Longboat Pass. On the bay side, Quick Point Nature Preserve offers a short boardwalk loop through the mangroves.

Good to know

  • Public beach access points have small lots that fill early; arrive before 10 a.m.
  • Staying at a Longboat resort? Your beach is right outside. See Where to Stay.
  • For a sandbar afternoon by boat, Barefoot Tiki runs private Longboat Key charters.

Siesta Key

Siesta Beach

Siesta Beach is the one everyone has heard of. Its sand is nearly pure quartz, so it stays cool underfoot and squeaks when you walk, and the beach was named the best in America by Dr. Beach in 2011 and again in 2017.

The public park has lifeguards, a pavilion, restrooms and a large free lot, and it is busy by late morning. For a calmer day, head south to Crescent Beach and the snorkeling at Point of Rocks, or to Turtle Beach at the quiet south end of the key.

Good to know

  • Siesta Beach Park is at 948 Beach Road; the free lot fills early on weekends and in season.
  • Point of Rocks, at the south end of Crescent Beach, has the best snorkeling on the keys.
  • After the beach, our Siesta Key fine dining picks are a short drive south.

Golden hour

Stay for the sunset

Every one of these beaches faces west over the Gulf. Sunset comes as early as about 5:40 p.m. in early December and as late as about 8:30 p.m. in late June, so plan dinner around it. For the best seat, watch from the water on a private sunset charter.
